Penis is made of blood vessels and soft tissues (called erectile muscles) that are filled with blood during an erection. During an erection, blood remains in the penis shaft until orgasm and then moves out of it as a result of which the erection will be lost. Erectile dysfunction is defined as a condition when a man is not able to have an erection even after proper stimulation (self or by partner). There can be different reasons that cause Erectile Dysfunction such as physical, psychological, medical etc. Going without erection for extended periods of time can damage the erectile muscles.

Did you know that there exists an injection called ‘Penile Injection’ or ‘Penis injection for erection’ that can help a man achieve an erection?  Penile injection helps a man achieve an erection within 5 to 15 minutes after injecting the medicine.

How does penile injection help in achieving an erection?

Penile injection has to be given to the shaft of the penis at a particular angle so that you don’t prick the blood vessels and deliver the medicine into the shaft muscles.  Once in, the medicine relaxes the erectile muscles and opens up the blood vessels so that more blood flows into them resulting in an erection.

Steps on giving your penis an injection for erection
After your sexologist determines that penile injection is right for you, he/she will guide you with steps on how to take the injection right from taking the medicine out of the vial to injecting it into the shaft of the penis. You will need to attend the sessions twice so that your doctor can be sure that you can administer the shot by yourself without hurting your penis.

In short, here are the steps on how to inject penile erection medicine prescribed by your sexologist:

Wash your hands with soap and clean water.
Take a new disposable syringe with needle.
Extract the medicine from the vial into the syringe in the position shown in the picture.
After removing the syringe from the vial, keep it vertical with needle pointing up
Pull back the plunger to pull the medicine from the needle into the syringe shaft
Slowly push the plunger up so that all the air is removed from the syringe. (A couple of drops of medicine can get out of the needle, that’s ok)
Hold your penis by its head and stretch it perpendicularly
Rub the injection site on the penis with cotton dipped in alcohol or sterilizing swabs.
Inject the needle of the syringe in 2 O’clock or 10 O’clock angle so that you don’t hit the blood vessels of the penis shaft.
After injecting the medicine into the penis shaft, remove the syringe. Press and hold the injection site with thumb and index finger of whatever fingers convenient to you for 2 minutes.
Dispose off the needle and syringe carefully.
You can then expect erection in 15 minutes.

When you should NOT take penile injection?

Putting it in simple terms, if you are taking oral medication for getting an erection such as Sildenafil (Viagra® ), Vardenafil (Levitra® ) or Avanafil (Stendra ® ), you should not take penile injection in less than 18 hours after taking these medicines.

In case if you are taking tadalafil (Cialis® ), you need to wait for 72 hours to take the penile injection.

Now, you may ask, “What happens if you take penile injection along with other oral medication for erectile dysfunction such as Viagra® ?“

Any oral medication for erectile dysfunction tries to pump the blood into the penis to help you get an erection. If the penile injection is also taken while the oral medication is working, the erection can last longer, sometimes really long. Don’t get excited, it’s dangerous! Prolonged erection even after ejaculation is called ‘Priapism’. Priapism can also occur just with penile injection but that’s very rare. When you have prolonged erection, the blood won’t flow out of the penis shaft and the erectile muscles in the penis shaft will be deprived of oxygen and that can lead to permanent damage of erectile muscles.

Treating Priapism
If you have erection that doesn’t soften even after orgasm, you will need to take the backup medication that your sexologist may have given you. If not, call your doctor immediately. He/she will suggest tablets of pseudoephedrine HCI that can help you lose erection.

If your erection still doesn’t soften and your penis doesn’t return to normal, understand that it is a medical emergency and see your doctor right away.

Medicines present in penile injection
There are 3 most commonly used medications for penile injection therapy:

Trimix
Bimix
Papaverine
Most men will be put on Trimix which is composed of alprostadil, phentolamine and papaverine medicines. You need to store these medicines in cold and dry place. You may/may not need to store them in your refrigerator depending on the medicine.
